Honiton Market could reopen tomorrow morning pending decision from Environmental Health

By Hannah Corfield 17th Sep 2021

Honiton Market could be allowed to operate again on the High Street from tomorrow (Tues), providing Environmantal Health - who are due to make the final decision today - agree with the proposal.

Honiton Town Council, who own the market, voted this morning in favour of it reopening as soon as possible.

An assessment detailing how the market could operate in accordance with social distancing has been submitted to the Environmental Health Officer, who has the final say on whether or not it is safe enough to reopen.

Town Development Manager, Tony McCollum said: "I am carrying out instructions from Honiton Town Council to reopen the market tomorrow morning, but it is subject to a final decision from Environmental Health."

Town Mayor, John Zarczynski commented: "Taking into consideration that there is a majority vote by town councillors to reopen the market as soon as possible, we are looking to doing this. However, we are awaiting a reply from Environmental Health before anything can go ahead."

Howling Wolf Coffee, who are regulars at Honiton Market serving hot beverages from a purpose-built trailer have said they are 'happy' about a decision to resume the market.

Owners James and Rochelle commented: "Of course we are happy about it, as we are confident that we have a solid social distancing plan and can trade safety.

"All of our events have been cancelled or postponed up until July, which has put us under great financial strain. So, if the market does reopen it will provide some much needed income.

"We are looking forward to seeing all our regulars and can't wait to be back on Honiton High Street!"

In a Prime Minister's press conference statement on 25 May, Boris Johnson stated: "I can announce that it is our intention to allow outdoor markets to reopen from June 1, subject to all premises being made COVID-secure."

As a traditional market town, since receiving the Royal charter in 1257; Honiton Market is an important part of the town's identity and normally attracts a range of traders to the High Street three times a week.
