Honiton Town Council has announced it has appointed a new council chairman and mayor.

Current councillor Helen Hurford was appointed as the Council Chairman and Honiton Mayor for the year 2023/24.

Councillor Tony McCollum was appointed as the Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Helen Hurford said, "I am delighted to be voted as Honiton Town Mayor. It is a great privilege to not only be the Town Mayor but the 9th female Mayor in the town's history, following in the footsteps of Councillor J Phillips OBE in 1920.

"I am fortunate to be the Chairman of 18 elected Councillors. Elected by the people of Honiton, who are motivated and determined to fulfil the ambitious plans and projects for the community.

"I intend to continue the example of Mayorship set by Councillor Sexton, to lead this council in a respectful and transparent manner, inclusive to all."

Councillor McCollum said "As newly elected Deputy Mayor, I am very happy to be able to offer my full support and work alongside Cllr Hurford in her role as Chair of Honiton Town Council and also as our newly elected Mayor. I look forward to our joint achievements in the coming year.
