When Doreen Hooper was diagnosed with cancer back in January, she received a care kit from friends containing numerous carefully considered items such as; cosy socks, a journal, hand gel and ginger biscuits (which can help with nausea).

The thoughtfulness of the gift and the relevance of the self-care items selected, sparked an idea to create and to give Chemotherapy Care Kits to others going through a similar ordeal.

According to Doreen: "It provided me with something to focus on when I was going through treatment and was a way of showing my appreciation for the generosity and support I received from the hospital and from FORCE Cancer Charity.

"I guess I just wanted to share the love a bit.

"My initial aim was to make 20 kits, so I bought the baskets and then put the feelers out to local businesses for donations to add to those from family and friends.

"And it just snowballed from there.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who kindly donated items and helped me with this project."

Below is a list of the people and businesses who supported Doreen:

Family & friends

Staff of Honiton Primary School

La La Choirs

Staff at Honiton Hospital

Tesco, Honiton

W.H. Smith, Honiton

A. Dimond & Co Ltd Otter Nurseries

The Original Factory Shop, Honiton

FORCE Cancer Charity volunteers

"I'm delighted that with your help I've been able to produce 80 kits which have given the recipients some comfort at such a difficult time.

"Thank you all so much."

With Doreen soon to return to work, the project is being taken on by FORCE volunteer, Lindsay Trimmer - with Doreen helping out when time allows.

We look forward to following up on this initiative and finding out the ways we can donate to the Chemotherapy Care Kits.
