In pictures: Honiton’s Hot Pennies Ceremony
Honiton's age-old Hot Penny Ceremony took place at noon today and it was enjoyed by hundreds of people.
Today's ceremony was the 801st. The event involves throwing coins out of the windows of Honiton's pubs for children to collect.
The High Street was packed with tourists and locals who came out to see the ceremony. The Town Crier opened the event and the first coins were thrown from The Bed Expert.
Dave Retter told Nub News that approximately 700 people were likely to attend.
Two friends, Jemma and Harriet, live in Honiton and they had come along to the event. Harriet said: "It's nice to be part of a tradition. I used to work in The Holt and was one of the throwers, so it is nice to be on the other side. But I used to throw them gently!"
Last week Town Crier Dave Retter told Nub News how important the event is: "I took over the Hot Pennies Ceremony 27 years ago to make sure it continued to happen.
"The ceremony draws people into the town, and it puts Honiton on the map, much like the Tar Barrels does for Ottery St. Mary. It attracts tourists.
"But tradition affects tourism, and tradition is what Honiton does. We must not lose the Hot Pennies ceremony."
