We all need to think about how we can live a more ethical existence, especially at Christmas - renowned for excess and dubious consumerist practices.
So, what could be better than a Pop-Up Christmas Market dedicated to local, independent makers?
Due to be held at Honiton Community College on December 5, this promises to be an evening of feel-good festive shopping - in support of the charity, Project Play.
Nub News interviewed local craft maker, Sara Berry, organising the event - who told us everything we need to know, about the market and the very important cause it's supporting.
- What made you decide to put on this event?
East Devon has a thriving creative network and we love celebrating that.
This will be a Christmas market that showcases artists and makers from within our community whilst supporting others, less fortunate than ourselves, through Positive Impact Shopping.
It's a total Win-Win!
We've run similar events for many years, in more rural locations, and are thrilled to be bringing an evening of relaxed shopping and festivities into the centre of town - something that Honiton currently does not offer.
Supporting local independents is vital at all times of the year and something we're hugely passionate about, but especially at Christmas when a little thought behind each purchase can not only put a smile on the receivers face, but also that of the hardworking individual that handcrafted each piece.
- Can you explain a bit about Project Play?
Project Play is a charity working on the ground in northern France to provide Safe Play Space and Education for displaced children.
They run sessions six days a week in various locations with the last figures showing their reach to be over 90 children per week and rising.
These are children that have fled any number of traumatic experiences in torn apart countries and deserve the opportunity to simply just 'be kids' and have an education.
Their sessions are designed to target key developmental skills for the children using a number of activities such as games, sports, creative tasks and formal learning.
I spent some months as the Education Lead for a similar organisation in France at the beginning of this year and was blown away by Project Play's determination, motivation and passion for their work.
- Who do you have confirmed to exhibit?
On the night, we'll have 15+ talented exhibitors selling their wares, including those detailed below.

- What can people expect from the evening?
The evening itself is all about a relaxed coming together of traders and consumers.
We encourage you to speak with and get to know the exhibitors and enjoy your Christmas shopping this year!
We'll make this easy for you by providing high quality gifts and a pop-up bar stocked with mulled cider that's previously won 'Best In Show' at the Devon County show!
There will also be a Restaurant Raffle with prizes to be won from the best of our local eateries, a lucky dip stand stall with prizes from the exhibitors and a gift wrapping service.
You won't even need to wrap your own presents this year!
- And finally, can you tell us a bit about you and your background in craft making?
My background in craft making has been extensive over the years, predominantly self taught though completing a silversmith course in Winchester.
I love working with recycled and sustainable materials and reworking them into contemporary designs.
Having been brought up in Luppitt and attending Honiton Community College, I'm really excited to be holding this event so close to home!
