Lockdown sparks new business venture for Honiton leccy
A local electrician is starting from scratch and going self-employed, after losing his job in lockdown.
Andrew Palmer, 45, who lives with partner Bryony Jackson in Honiton, was suddenly left without work when the pandemic hit.
Having been employed by a national electrical company for the past five years it came as a real shock.
"It was the first time I haven't had a job in my life," Andrew told Honiton Nub News.
"I decided my only option was to go-it alone and start my own business, whereas before, I went for the security of working for a company with a guaranteed monthly income to pay the mortgage."
Andrew contacted the Honiton Job Centre for advice on setting up a business and becoming self-employed.
"They were brilliant. They asked to see a business plan, which I provided and they agreed on a set sum of money seven days later."
Honiton Electrix was given the green light and Bryony used her marketing skills to create a website and get the word out on social media.
"We're starting from a zero client base, which is always daunting," Bryony explained. "Today was a milestone though, as we had our first online booking."
A recent change in the law, from June 1, means that rented accommodation now requires electric checks with an up to date certificate as proof.
"People aren't really aware of it yet, but anyone who rents properties will need to get the electric checked and signed off every five years," Andrew continued.
"Before it was only the gas every 12 months. Part of the reason for the new legislation is due to the fire service taking more measures to prevent domestic fire incidents.
"It is an area I specialise in, so I'm hoping that will drive business. I also fit and test charging points for cars, which will increase in demand as more cars turn electric."
