Sidmouth Conservative MP Simon Jupp has called on Boris Johnson to resign after latest scandal
Simon Jupp, who is the Member of Parliament for East Devon, has called on the Prime Minister to 'do the decent thing' and resign.
Mr Jupp's constituency covers Sidmouth, Ottery St. Mary, Cranbrook and Exmouth.
He joins Richard Foord, the MP for Tiverton and Honiton, in calling for his resignation.
Jupp's comments come on a day of great political turmoil and he joins a large number of other Conservative MPs who have called on their leader to leave office . At the time of writing (8pm on Wednesday 6 July) 38 ministers and aids have resigned over Boris Johnson's response the latest sexual scandal.
In an open letter posted on social media Jupp said: "I wish to inform the people I am proud to represent that I no longer have confidence in the Prime Minister.
"Boris Johnson has faced many challenges during his tenure as Prime Minister. He has demonstrated admirable leadership on the international stage to support Ukraine. He went above and beyond to protect jobs at the height of the pandemic.
"However, too many of the challenges faced by the Prime Minister are a result of self-inflicted wounds. Leaders must demonstrate integrity, honesty, and set a high standard that we can all be proud of. The current situation is a grotesque distraction from the many challenges we face as a nation. I cannot tolerate this any longer and my constituents in East Devon expect better.
"In order to restore trust in the highest office of the land, the Prime Minister must do the decent thing and resign. If he does not, colleagues and I must consider how we can bring about a change in leadership at the earliest opportunity.
"It is the honour of my life to serve as the Member of Parliament for East Devon. I will never take that for granted."
Yesterday evening Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak resigned just 15 minutes after the Prime Minster's statement which acknowledged that he did know about historical accusations against Chris Pincher.
In Prime Minster's Questions this afternoon, Sajid Javid said 'treading the line between integrity and loyalty was becoming increasingly difficult.'
The BBC is tonight reporting that Michael Gove and Priti Patal have also told the Prime Minster should go, both of whom are Johnson loyalists.
