Boris Johnson has bowed to pressure and will resign today
After days of turmoil and a wave of resignations yesterday, Boris Johnson has agreed to resign as Prime Minister.
A source from No 10 said that Mr Johnson has spoken to Sir Graham Brady, who is the chairman of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee, and agreed to stand down. There will be a new leader of the Conservative party in place by October. Until then, Mr Johnson will act as a caretaker Prime Minster.
Yesterday several Devon MPs called for the Prime Minster to resign. The newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Honiton, Richard Foord, said: "Time is up for Boris Johnson. We know it and his colleagues in Cabinet know it. He should finally end this painful saga and resign."
The MP for East Devon (which covers Ottery St. Mary and Sidmouth) Simon Jupp also said that Mr Johnson should leave office. In a letter posted on social media he said: "Leaders must demonstrate integrity, honesty, and set a high standard that we can all be proud of.
"The current situation is a grotesque distraction from the many challenges we face as a nation. I cannot tolerate this any longer and my constituents in East Devon expect better."
