Brothers, Angus and Joe McCaig - many will know from The Holt in Honiton - have set up an authentic pizza oven, stationed out the back of Toast Café, serving gourmet stone baked pizzas every Thursday to Saturday from 5 - 8.30pm.

Prepare for a rustic crust, all the right hues of golden brown and bubbling cheese scattered with a selection of colourful veggies or meat slices.

Dietary requirements, such as vegan and gluten-free, are also catered for.

Lovingly crafted, the bases are made from hand-cultured sourdough, which Chef Gus even has names for - I can personally vouch for 'Betty' - cooked to order through the Toast website.

Joe McCaig told Honiton Nub News: "It's been surreal. We've gone from managing a busy gastro pub to what is essentially a festival set-up.

"In a way, it's been cool; going right back to basics. The fact is, we have no control over the situation so no choice but to run with it and make the most."

Speaking of the impact the coronavirus crisis is having on the industry, Joe said: "Hospitality has been brought to its knees and there is still no clear way forward.

"Any vague guidelines outlined by the Government do not take into consideration how our business model works - reduced capacity in restaurants just isn't viable in most cases.

"We need 80-100% covers on a regular basis in order to make any profit, so who knows what the future holds.

"The Holt is obviously at more of a disadvantage than other premises, given that we have no outdoor space and a fairly confined bar area.

"That said, we are staying positive. Our takeaway service has proved popular and we're very grateful for people's support.

"Running like this has meant we are able to stay true to our suppliers and is helping to just about keep us afloat."

He added: "I think the thing to focus on is the amount of positives that have come out of it, not that you see much of it in the media, but there are so many stories of how people have come together and supported their communities."
