The chairman of Devon County Council has used 'Thank You Day' to issue a message of gratitude to everyone who has helped other people during the Covid pandemic – including all those who have simply obeyed the rules and kept infection rates low in this area.

John Hart said with the prospect of the restrictions easing, Sunday, July 4 was a chance to 'celebrate the spirit that got us through'.

Volunteers sorting surplus food at Honiton Family Church

Local community group Honiton Foodsave has launched an appeal for donations to help it continue its day-to-day activities.

Set up in November 2020 to combat both food waste and food poverty, Honiton Foodsave organises 39 collections of surplus food every week from 11 supermarkets, restaurants and other local sources. Since its founding seven months ago, the group has distributed well over 26,000 items of perfectly useable food to residents of Honiton and the surrounding areas, in a grand total of 3,000 organised food parcels. All this food would have been thrown away if it had not collected by the group.

An appeal's been launched for unwanted school uniforms and equipment, to help families in East Devon who can't afford to buy them.

Citizens Advice East Devon's Kit 4 Kids project will be collecting the clothing and other items, laundering and repairing them, and giving them out to families in need. The aim is to supply as many families as possible in time for the start of the new term in September.
