Woz On: Or 'Woz Off' after surviving the strangest of seasons

Woz On? Or, as our chairman said: " Woz Off!"

Boris is out of danger. He has had a rough time and on top of that he starts off with Brexit, then moves on to Covid-19 and possible financial ruin for the country - not a bad start to the top job!

Anyway, I trust you are all keeping well in these difficult times. And for those at home, I hope you are enjoying the weather whilst ploughing through your 'always meant to do that' list of jobs. No excuse for an untidy garage or shed!

For me, it has been a case of 'if it moves paint it'. I'm wondering if you can paint plant leaves, but I'll save that for when I get really desperate.

Bin day is another excitement and a highlight of the week. I've also been video calling family and friends to stay in touch with the outside world.

Anyway, on to "Woz Off". We've had some great news; the RFU have now officially given up on this season and rightly so.

They have applied a complicated formula to the end of season's positions and I'm pleased to say that we survived to fight another day in this league, ending up 4th from bottom.

I genuinely think we didn't really need this assessment, as I think we would have stayed up on our own merit and if you'd been watching the boys as I have in the last few games, we were definitely finishing strongly.

Beating third-placed Kingsbridge with ease, was not only a pleasure to watch, but looked impressive. I think we would have moved up a couple of places on our own merit.

What this does all mean is? We have achieved another new mile stone, as we have done what we've not been able to do before and managed to get past the "go up and go straight back down" scenario.

So my congratulations must go to the coaching staff and players, who have been loyal to the cause throughout and have stuck with it through some difficult times.

Also our second team have been given their merit table position and credit to them - they finished 4th, which is great! Big thanks to their management team as well.

Despite a definite decline in lower team rugby, it's fair to say we've bucked the trend and didn't cancel any games because of numbers, which was unlike some of the other clubs we have fixtures with.

Numbers have been good throughout the season and frankly that's community rugby at it's best.

When this mess is over, we need to organise a celebration and thank everyone properly for a most odd season of rugby. Watch this space on that one.

Whilst both those achievements are good news for the old girl, obviously we now look ahead at what is a very difficult time. Dealing with a 'no revenue' situation and paying rent bills etc. with no income is going to be a tad difficult.

We are trying to look at all lifelines and various schemes and I must say East Devon District Council are trying to be as helpful as possible.

We have our man Andy C on the case and he is sniffing out grant and loan avenues. Thanks to all of you who have sent in suggestions on new avenues or just seen new schemes etc.

I realise for all of you moving forward work and money are going to be tight, however again I will plug the 100 club and ask if you can sign up? It all helps club funds and you could win a cash prize each month; go on the website for details or contact Jo Huskins - she'll talk you through how to do it.

As mentioned, the "pop up" kitchen running out of the club is going well and the team led by the McCullum's and Jason Hannay are continuing to providing a valuable service to the community.

Did speak with Deno's mum, Debbie, who was down beavering away as a valued volunteer and they really are looking after those in need, all from our humble property.

Yesterday, 200 meals went out and they are also feeding Sid! Don't forget, if you can volunteer they still need help to deliver stuff to those who can't get out.

Obviously any donations of food or finance will help keep this valuable community asset going.
