First Honiton Scout Groups build castles for the Queen’s Jubilee

By Kate Baxter 15th Apr 2022

Honiton's First Scouts were asked by their group leaders to make imaginative castles at home and spend the night in them, to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

The Scouts is an organisation for children and young people which encourages personal growth through volunteering, outdoor adventures and helping others. It was founded in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell.

The 1st Honiton Scout was registered in February 1930 and they have been in the same building since 1936, when a Mr Cottrell donated his house to Honiton Scouts. It is located on Dowell Street.

The members of 1st Honiton Scout Groups, which include the Cubs, Beavers and Scouts, were asked to make a castle out of items they had at home, and then spend the night in their creation.

Helen Tuner, 63, has been involved with the Honiton Scouts for over 30 years. She is the volunteer Scout leader who supports team leaders who work with the different groups. She lives in Wilmington.

Helen told Nub News: "We asked our members to build a castle and sleep in it overnight.

"The youngsters put so much effort into them and they look brilliant. The children told us all about their castles and how they decided what to do and what fun it was to sleep in them overnight.

"We thought it would be a fun thing for them to do and earn a badge at the same time. In Scouting we always like to set them FUN challenges and this was fun and kept with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee theme."

Helen explained to Nub News how much she has enjoyed her work with the Scouts: "Watching all the young people learn new skills, socialise and having fun is brilliant.

"Seeing how their confidence grows as they go through the sections is amazing.

"Scouting is fun, adventurous and a real challenge!"

Scarlett Marshall is 6 and she is a Beaver. She really enjoyed making her castle and she said: "I had fun making my castle, and getting paint everywhere.

"I liked finding pictures of the Queen to put on my flag. She has lots of nice jewellery. It was fun to sleep in it like a real princess!"

Cubs, Beavers and Scouts meet each week in Honiton. Cubs takes place on a Monday and Tuesday evening, Beavers on a Wednesday and Thursday evening and Scouts on a Wednesday evening. The meeting happen during term time only.
