A document detailing how Devon can reach net-zero emissions by 2050 has been released, and everyone is asked to play their part.
The final version of the Devon Carbon plan has now been published, and it provides a roadmap for how Devon will reach net-zero emissions by 2050
The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that carbon emissions must reduce globally by at least 45% by 2030, compared to 2010 levels.
If global warming can be kept below 1.5 degrees, there is a chance we can avoid the worst effects of climate change. However, to achieve this target, we must be carbon neutral/net-zero by 2050 – at the latest
The Devon Climate Emergency group asked an organisation called Net-Zero Task Force to create the Devon Carbon Plan, which has been in development for several years.
It is hoped that the Devon Carbon Plan can reverse the declines to wildlife and ecosystems and prepare for the inevitable risks which climate change will bring.
The Devon Climate Emergency Group is also preparing an Adaptation Plan for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which will help the South West mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Adaptation Document is still in the consultation phase.
The launch of the Devon Carbon Plan marks a new stage of action and everyone is being urged to play their part to reduce carbon emissions.
Carbon emissions in Devon can be divided into five key sectors:
1. Economy and resources
2. Energy supply
3. Food
4. Land and sea
5. Transport and the built environment.
How can I reduce my emissions?
Here are some ideas from the Devon Carbon Plan to help your lower your personal carbon emissions:
· Reduce your consumption: Ask yourself whether you really need to buy something – could you fix what you already own, borrow it or find it second-hand?
· Make use of Honiton's facilities that can reduce waste, for example the Repair Café, the second-hand shops and Swap Shops.
· At home, wash your clothes at 30 degrees, turn your thermostat down and insulate your home
· Eat less meat, and when you do buy it try and choose local producers who farm in a sustainable way.
