A group of travellers occupying mobile homes have gained access to Allhallows playing field in Honiton. They arrived late on Friday afternoon and their vehicles have remained parked on the premises since.
The travellers' appearance on the recreational grounds coincided with Honiton Triathlon, which was scheduled to take place yesterday (6 July). Due to the premises being otherwise occupied, organisers were forced to postpone the event.
A statement issued by Pure Endurance, who are responsible for organising the triathlon, read: "Due to circumstances out of our control, we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone tomorrow's triathlon.
"We have consulted with the local authorities and feel this is the best for everyone."
Many people took to social media to express their opinion on the temporary encampment and the impact it has on the community.
Town Councillor, Caroline Kolek, commented on 'The Honiton Community UK' Facebook group: "I'm totally gutted to learn that due to the travellers on Allhallows tomorrow's triathlon has been cancelled.
"All those who have spent hours training for this event must be disappointed to say the least. Like others I've spent hours and sums of money preparing for this."
Another comment read: "I'm gutted... Extremely to be honest. I was taking part in tomorrow's triathlon and you're right, months of training not to mention having to give a months notice at my job to get the day off work. It's not that simple to just get the day off for when they reschedule."
Others showed their support for the travellers. One response read: "Not showing much in the way of compassion and understanding. Despicable, who? If you ask people to compromise, they might well do it, could be the way they are treated."
East Devon District Council issued this statement to the travellers: "You are currently occupying a site without the permission or licence of East Devon District Council and as such the Council is considering whether they should exercise their powers to require you to leave the site.
"The Council is aware of the problems faced by travellers and other occupants of unauthorised encampment and it will carefully consider the circumstances surrounding any unauthorised encampment before deciding whether to use its powers to enforce the vacation of the site."
Honiton Nub News has contacted Devon and Cornwall Police for comment.
