A new walking group has started in Honiton and the aim is to offer a way for solo walkers to find companions to take a stroll with.

The initiative is suitable for all ages and abilities because people choose the walk they wish to go on, and then post to the group to see if anyone would like to join them.

Unlike other local walking groups, people are able to schedule walks for anytime during the week, including the weekends. Dogs are also able to come along.

It is hoped that the group could also be used to help people find walking companions for others if they do not use the internet.

Honiton is surrounded by lovely walks, ranging from short strolls in the ever-popular Glen or longer hikes up Roundball Hill, woodland walks in Coombe Woods and even hillforts, such as Dumpdon.

There are also the coastal walks, such as the walk between Branscombe to Beer, which was recently voted one of the UK's best routes.

Brian Houlihan has lived in Honiton for five years and he started the group. Since its launch two weeks ago, it already has more than seventy members.

Brian told Nub News: "The aim of the Honiton Walkers Facebook group is to help people connect with others so that they can ask for people to walk with or invite others for a walk. It's about helping each individual to find a 'walking buddy' for company.

"Walking with others has benefits such as helping people get outdoors exercising and meeting others. Unlike a walking club, all abilities are included, and walking can talk place anywhere and at any time!

"Some people are reluctant to join a formal walking group as they do not drive or because they are worried that they may not be able to keep up with the group pace.

"Already a few individuals have arranged a short walk together!"

You can find the group here.
