The newly elected MP for Tiverton and Honiton has tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling for a reduction in fuel duty for rural areas, and he urged other MPs to join him.

Richard Foord MP was elected as the constituency's new MP on Friday morning after Thursday's by-election.

In a letter requesting the motion be added to today's agenda, Mr Foord states that there has been a significant rise in the price of petrol and diesel since the start of the year, and that rural communities often pay 'significantly' more for fuel.

He goes on to mention that poor public transport provision in rural areas means many people have no choice but to drive.

Mr Foord beat Conservative candidate Helen Hurford to win the seat after a closely fought contest between the Liberal Democrats and the Tories. Liz Pole came third in the by-election and failed to secure enough votes to win her deposit back.
