Liz Pole, who stood in last week's Tiverton and Honiton by-election, has congratulated Richard Foord and thanked her supporters, volunteers and campaign staff.

The Liberal Democrats won Thursday's by-election by reversing a Conservative majority of 24,000, a swing of more than 30 per cent.

In a statement released on her Facebook page, Liz Pole said: "Across the country, people have sent a clear signal that they have had enough of the Conservatives.

"I'll continue to campaign, in our communities, for a Labour government.

"I'm proud to have campaigned for Labour's Children's Recovery Plan, 16-24 Jobs Promise, £280bn Climate Investment Pledge, for infrastructure and genuinely affordable housing, to Fund Our Tivvy High, to save Devon's farms, and to make Brexit work."

Liz Pole came third in the by-election, gaining 3.7 per cent of the vote. Helen Hurford for the Conservatives was second with 38.5 per cent and Richard Foord for the Liberal Democrats won the seat by gaining 52.9% per cent.

Two Nub News' polls, a vox pop and many interviews with local people correctly suggested that the Liberal Democrats were on track to win the seat.
